Calling all Houstonians...

Feb 13 2012 Published by under Meetings

I'll be in your neck of the woods for an NCBI workshop on March 13-14th.  Give me some ideas for fun things to do while I'm there, and if anyone wants to grab a bite to eat or a beer, drop me a line.  Oh and where can I rent a horse, I need some fuel efficient transportation while I'm there.

Not from there, but I'll be there from the 17-21, so I'll be keeping track of this post for suggestions!

That depends on what part of town you will be in (I advise against trying to drive and park places). If you'll be near the med center/Rice U, you will also be close to the museum district and the park/zoo. Lots of restaurants/bars/shopping in Rice village.

The Rodeo will also be in town that week (you joke about the horse but the Rodeo is a very big deal around here). Hop on the train and head to Reliant Stadium for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo...animals, rodeo, carnival, concerts, and all the deep fried fair food you can imagine.

I second the rodeo recommendation. You haven't seen Houston if you haven't been to rodeo. But if you get the chance to see the Museum of Fine Arts, it's excellent, as is the Museum of Natural History. There is excellent dining in Rice Village, and near Montrose/Westheimer (take a cab if you're staying near the Med Center...you can take the Metrorail, but it goes downtown, not really to the Montrose area). The Montrose area is a very cool, more artsy area of town. Downtown has the theatre district, and is also very nice, but other than the theatre district, it's almost a ghost town after 5PM...not terribly safe at night. Washington Avenue is a great place for clubs (interspersed with a variety of warehouses).
